  What´s next

    Author:

Piet Hein and Michael Fahres have put the four recordings together. Michael has listened to all the results. Do we have all the material necessary? Do we have to make new recordings?
We meet again…

The results from the recordings at the “Risco” are great. We decide that we don´t have to do them again. But because we need as much material as possible, we make some other recordings at the house. The titles of these recordings are “Engañado”, “Columbus, chica” and “5 abroad”.

The weather is good, no rain, no wind….YES

    Author:

The drummers went back up the path and through the fields to there positions. Tripods and Zooms and drums, luckily we had some hands to help. It was a good day and between 12.00 and 17.00 h. there are not that many cars on the road…they too have there echo, but we don´t want those sounds.

Everyone is ready, everyone knows the signals:
If you put up you´re hand, the microphone is in position.
If the Michael beats the woodblock three times, the microphone has to be switched on, you have to get in position and raise you´re hand again.
When he beats the woodblock ones this is the signal that will help us synchronize the different tapes.
Michael Jüllich starts.
Three beats, recordings have to be stopped. And we start again…same procedure.
We made 4 different recordings. The six beats meant we were ready for today.

  Recordings in Charco Manco

    Author:

Because there are beautiful caves along the coast of El Hierro, also near Echedo, we drove down to Charco Manco and carried the drums into one of the caves. We had to be careful because the water was entering the cave with full force. Luckily nothing happened and our Zoom H2 stayed dry.

Finding the right spot along a long wall

    Author:

The “Risco de Tibataje” is 8 kilometres long, and we had to find a good spot where the echo/reflection would be best.
We had not only to find the spot but also to find out where to place the microphones. We had three drums and with each drum we placed a Zoom H2.
Then we had to find the right spot to put the other microphones which would catch the sounds of the three drums and the Risco!
Here we used DPA 4060/4090 microphones and taped the sounds with a Tascam DA-P2 hard disk recorder.
The first spot we found when we went up the “Camino de la Peña”, an old footpath where the people would walk along during the “Bajada”. It is now closed because it is too dangerous, but we didn´t have to go up all the way. The drums are at about 100 metres from each other.

On Tuesday we eventually found the right spot. On Wednesday we went back to make tests for the recordings.

Trying if there is an echo

Trying if there is an echo

Piet Hein and Michael Fahres had to check all recordings made that day to see if any alterations of the installation had to be made.
